You gain research points passively (the rate increases with play time and how dangerous is the planet you are currently one), researching items which destroys them, reward from some quests, etc. In order to unlock new stuff you need to fulfill the requirements which are usually research points + some items. The research system allows you to go from a doofus to a god. That makes it feel more like you are preparing for a mission and gives you something to work for. The change from universal equipment to asking what equipment is the best for this planet and my playstyle (since set can have combat bonuses) is a great change. Hot planets require heat protection, cold planets require cold protection, radioactive planets radiation protection, planet size chunks of flesh that may be alive require insanity protection, etc. Like in vanilla, you need to go to increasingly more dangerous planets to get more resources, but the catch is that most planets have hazards that require a specific type of protection.Į.I.
